I have a Kennedy half that came apart when I dropped it. The part that confuses me is that inside the half was the reverse of a quarter. Only the reverse was inside not the obverse. Was this a mint mistake or did someone put this together. I got this coin in change.

It's what's called a " Magician's coin" and is a post-mint, man-made product. The reverse of a Kennedy half is ground down. Typically, another obverse is added to make a "two-headed" half dollar; this is the first I've seen with a quarter reverse hiding under the half reverse.

Fun find! It is a Magician's coin; made by someone after the coin left the mint. Welcome!

Yes, an interesting variety of Magician's coin.
Anyone know the use for it like this?

Thank you for your replies. I had never heard of these but I suspected it was not real.

@richt56, first welcome to CCF. Second, while the numismatic value was destroyed in the construction of this Magician's coin, there are folks who still make them (and others who buy them). I'd save it in a 2x2.

Quite frankly, it is worth more as it is now than if it had not been altered. I have a few Magician's coins, and would have paid a few dollars had I seen it for sale at my LCS.
