I'm sure this topic has been posted here before. I am beyond words about these folks who sell coins at 300-600% the coins value to the ignorant public. These people are not in the coin field, have no education on the subject of Numismatics, nor do they deal in ethical practices. They are merely salespeople who are probably reading off a teleprompter, and told to sell a product. What are your thoughts?

.... .... ..... ..... HSN and their ilk are bad news......This has been talked about on CCF many many times. It's American Capitalist Theology at it's lowest !! For the new unsuspecting buyer, who's uneducated with little experience......it's a nightmare waiting to happen and repeatedly until they realize what they're doing.....then it's too late of course. I really don't know how those guys at HSN sleep at night.. PROBABLY ON A MATTRESS OF MONEY !! I wish I could see a class action lawsuit with them !..

It amazes me how people will shy away from coin dealers because they don't trust them but then will buy this stuff. Then later when they take it to a coin dealer to sell it they get mad at the coin dealer for offering so much less than they paid for it thinking again that the coin dealer is dishonest. The whole thing just upsets me.

Nicely stated eaglefoot. Could not have said it better myself. If you live in the sticks and your nearest coin store is 100 miles away, check out ebay. Why would anyone buy coins from these snake oil salesman . Give me a break!

Some people want to believe a set of gold-plated State Quarters is an incredible investment, and these guys tell them exactly what they want to hear. But I don't blame the naive buyers as much as HSN, because eventually word will get around and their reputation will be sunk.

Those people are salesmen and they do their job well. I hate them for what they do. Of course e-bay can be just as bad if you don't know what you are doing.

Quote: Those people are salesmen and they do their job well. Firstly I'll say that I detest what they do in regards to how it effects the world of numismaticsThese guys are doing what any great salesmen does...they add value. They take a product and technically, without lying, they make the potential buyer want to have their product. They aren't fully forthcoming with every detail but they say enough that closes a sale. Sales is the transference of enthusiasm. They are great and what they do but unfortunately their practices do hinder the true growth potential of numismatics as a whole.

If there really is a fiery place that awaits the truly evil, then I am sure there is a special wing reserved for these types of swindlers! Now would be a good time to put the "parental lock" on all of the shopping channels; make sure your children and spouses know there are very bad things on those channels! And to block those shows that pop-up on the "normal" channels late at night, we should lobby to get a separate TV Rating ( TV-BS maybe?) assigned to them; so that we can block on that rating as well!

I never bought from them. There's plenty of places online for coin's or coin shops.

In my opinion, anything that is sold solely via toll-free number advertised on television, is garbage. The Garbage Factor increases with the number of "free gifts" included, the volume of the hawker, and the number of times that they emphasize how important it is to act RIGHT THIS VERY SECOND SO YOU DON'T MISS OUT ON THIS ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY.
There's one commercial on now about some kind of Liberian $20... thing... that looks like a banknote, but is covered in GENUINE SILVER leaf, with a Twin Towers memorial design... just turns my stomach.

I have seen them selling current Mint products that are still in stock on the Mint's website for a 25%+ markup. Exe. A 2008 Proof ASE for $55 +S&H. They probably just have them drop shipped directly from the mint. It is an absolute travesty what they do.

I think if all of us CCF members would tell every one we know to ask us before they, (the uneducated in coins people) buy any coins from anybody, we give them some educated coin advice, these sales people on tv would not be selling to much stuff any longer to the nieve customers. John1
