This is my first posting as I am a new member. I have found this Kennedy half with an interesting mint mark error. Could anyone give me an idea what this may be categorized as? *** Moved by Staff moved to a more appropriate forum. ***

to CCF. Looks like something is on the coin, some kind of stick gunk. You can try using 100% pure acetone for a soak and see if it comes off. John1

@slotster500, first welcome to CCF. Second, yes this appears to be not part of the coin, but rather something stuck on its surface right next to the mintmark. I'll be interested to hear if it comes off with acetone.

Hello everyone in the coin community! I am also new to this. Didn't know where to go to ask this but I came across a 1971d Kennedy half that weighs(consistently)11.007g could someone tell me if or what would be considered an acceptable weight variance. Have found several that are underweight by at least .200g or more. Any help or info is very much appreciated. Thank you & have a wonderful day.

@YM, first welcome to CCF. Second, the weight of this coin is specified at 11.34 ± 0.26 g, so I'd say your coin is right on the edge of being lighter than expected. I would encourage you to start your own thread and post pics there so that we can take a look at it without hijacking this current thread. Thx.

If something were sprayed on the coin I could see this as a peel of what ever coated the coin. It not silver colored so I feel it is not a mint error. But I've seen an example of a struck through debris that was on a mint mark before: This one is a mint error as the color is the same as the coin. But needed to be saved to be worth anything. They guy who found it probably had it slabbed along with the coin.

Save the piece in question, before adding the acetone just to the coin. It may just go away? You might check the back side of the piece to see if it is silver colored or not?

I did dip the coin and whatever looked to be a second mintmark either removed itself or dissolved. I could find nothing in the acetone.
Thanks for the input.

Slotster500, it was probably gunk that got removed during the Acetone soak.
