Hi,
I hope I'm posting this to the correct area. I've tried to search for something similar but did not find anything. I purchased a book of liberty half dollars and came across this one in the 1939 S slot. It appears to be a D, however, it looks struck over but not quite as clear as some of the D/D strikes I found. Does anyone have any thoughts on what it may be or if it is simply some damage to the coin? I've placed another 1939 with a D mint mark next to it for comparison. Thank you in advance for any information.

Looks like the mintmark has a contact mark from another coin. Normal, PMD (post minting damage) not an error.

Just damage. Not an error.

Thanks so much. I appreciate the feedback. I'll throw it in as another D mint mark. Maybe I'll find something good in the next round.

Either the metal moved a bit, or the post that formed the inside of the 'D' mint mark has broken off the die. They didn't use 'P' mint marks until a few years later. On the Silver War Nickels there were 'P' mint marks. Then it disappeared until 1980 when they started using the 'P' mint marks again. so it can't be a'P' mint mark. Just a damaged mint mark.
