Hello
Could you please help me to identify the coin I have recently found in the garden ?
I understand that I am probably posting to the wrong forum, but I am at complete loss and not sure where to even start.

to CCF. It is best to crop photos before posting. Give it a bit and members will help you.

This is an early example of the "bull and horseman" coin. About 1000 years old. What in the world is such a good example doing in your garden! Do you live in the garden of Eden?

But seriously, there are a lot of types and the basic type was issued for hundreds of years. Someone else may be able to narrow it down.

@wally1980, first welcome to CCF. Second, I agree that this is a Bull and Horseman Jital. I've recommended to the mods that your thread be moved to the Ancients section of CCF to get more eyeballs on it. In the meanwhile, if you use the keywords BULL HORSEMAN JITAL in the search box in the upper left hand part of your screen you will find multiple other threads with similar coins.

Not a surprising find, really. Consider how many Brits served in Afghanistan and what is now Pakistan over the last 180 years. A fairly common coin, probably brought back to the UK as a souvenir and kept as a pocket piece until being lost in your garden.

A less-likely possibility is Viking trade routes which stretched from England to Central Asia. These coins were the most important trade coin of their era and have been found in context in Northern Europe. I know of one academic at Cambridge who gets quite excited at finds like this. Won't listen to reason.

Do report the coin to your local FLO. All those finds of Edwards and Constantines need the occasional Spalapati to break the monotony.

The Spalapati Deva drachms are believed to have been minted in Kabul by the Turk Shahis between about 700 and 950, catalogued as Tye 4; Deyell 20. "Spalapati" means 'war-lord'.

Here is a similar coin found in England, though it may be the slightly later Samanta Deva type:
