I don't know much about them except that is a valuable coin, so chances are it might be fake. I am sure someone will come along with more knowledge soon. Better pics would help.

....the the Community! Looks real, looks cleaned. Looks can be deceiving though. I'm guessing it was in a jewelry bezel at one time. Whatever you do .. DO NOT TRY AND CLEAN THE COIN OR DO ANYTHING TO MAKE IT LOOK BETTER! Value? A coin like that will need to be third party graded to be marketable and to establish a value. If real it could be worth a considerable amount of money. Right now I'd place it in the $5000 to $7500 range (if it's real). They only made 5000 of them to begin with! Others may have a different opinion.

The pictures are not good but the rims look questionable and the date appears strange as well. Likely not authentic. It is a $20,000 if genuine in AU+ condition. P.S. Here's a PCGS certified AU53 piece currently for sale at $23,113: https://www.brokencc.com/modules.ph...successfully.

I must be remembered that all dates of U.S. gold coins, of all denominations, have been faked in the past. Because it is a rare date, there is a much greater temptation for it to be faked.
Need much sharper focus pictures for this thread.
Needs to be checked accurately for weight.
If these OK, then it needs to be checked with an XRF instrument. Go to a scrap gold buyer for that. If it turns out to be .900 fine, you must keep the coin, for further consideration. If it turns out to be .900 fine, it will be worth many times it's gold value. The scrap gold buyer may well ask for a testing fee.

perhaps if you can supply some background information on the coin.. like were it was obtained from, how long have you had it, what did you pay for it, etc..

As noted above, on the OP coin the date details of the loops on the eight and bottom loop on the nine look off and position is not correct. I would guess only one set of dies being used for a gold mintage of 5000 coins as I could not fine any other position for the date or CC. The position of the CC is off when compared to genuine examples. The OP coin appears to be a counterfeit. Genuine NGC AU58 OP Coin

There are too many problems for me to think this is real. I see a lot of little surface bubbles which indicate casting. If you want to find out for sure send it to ANACS for inexpensive authentication.

Date numeral style does not match that on the known genuine coin. At that time they were using the same date logotype for ALL the dies, so the date should be the same on every die for that year. The 1's are too tall and thin, the inner loops of the 8 and 9 are almost round notovals as on the genuine.

Lots of evidence here pointing to a fake. I'm certainly convinced.

100% fake. Heritage Auctions is your friend - search auction archives and look at images. Not only is CC in the wrong position, I don't think it was even taken from a real CC coin. The C's look childish. And where is the eagle's left wing? The date just looks silly. Hope you didn't pay real money for this. The cheapest real one on HA went for $4000, and that was AU50 repaired and whizzed.

The next question I'd like to know is: new fake or old fake?
