What do you do when you see something good in the teller's coin tray? I was at Bank of America today (looking for half dollars) and saw a War Nickel in the teller's tray. I thought quickly and asked the teller for a 25 cents worth of nickels. When she handed them to me there was a War Nickel and four others from the 40s. I bought the whole row and got a number of 40's plus one more War Nickel. I think I am going back to ask for all of their nickels.

What do you do when you see something good in the teller's tray? Are there any good stories out there?

Great story! I remember at the grocery store when I used to look in at the coins in those coin machines that drop the coins out when the register opens. My mom would be holding my hand and I would be looking for dimes and quarters that had all silver reeding. I would always grab the change right away and look through it.

G'day, if something catches my eye, I ask to see it more closely. I explain that I'm a coin collector.
Generally, tellers and cashiers look at me in the same way they look at backward children: harmless, but it's better to amuse us than to risk a tantrum.
Some cashiers seem curious to hear anything that detracts from the tedium of their working hours ... or perhaps they're just politely feigning interest.

I have gotten some stuff from my bank, but my mom and brother got it for me. We all use the same bank. My mother bought three Eisenhower dollars they had, and my brother just so happened to spot a 40%'er in the tray. Its good that I have now trained my brother, mother, and girlfriend to spot silver because they have better luck than I do at finding it.
