Poll Question
I still see a healthy mix of XF and EF usage on the grading forums here. PCGS and NGC use XF but ANACS uses EF, so what say you?
Checked past topics and the last poll of this was in 2006 (I think) so perhaps we're due for a fresh one to see how times have changed. I expect a truly lively discussion of this age-old debate so let's keep it civil in the comments please.

All three are acceptable and understood abbreviations for the Extremely Fine grade. Advertisements from as far back as the 19th century utilized the ExF abbreviation. EF can be seen as early as the turn of the twentieth century and XF showing up (as far as I have seen) sometime in the early 1950s. Each of theese have decades of use behind them. Not one is "right" or "wrong" as they are each known to attribute the same grade.
So, is it a soda, a cola, or a pop? It's the same thing...just a different identifier from different people's background...

I used the British grading system for perhaps 15 years before I came familiar with the Sheldon system, which I use for U.S. coins only. Impractical to use Sheldon grading on ancient coins; it just doesn't make any sense.
EF is the term I prefer for both systems.

Quote: So, is it a soda, a cola, or a pop? None of the above. It is a Coke. I voted XF, because it appeals most to my senses. That's my best reason.

XF for me. EF just sounds kind of awkward to me

I voted EF because I use the first letter of each word as a shortened version, Extra Fine. And my favorite pop is Pepsi Cola or PC John1

I am not always consistent but I seem to use XF most of the time.

When I first started collecting it was always said XF (Extra Fine) . After some years by one source or another I found out that was an incorrect way of saying it . The correct way is EF ( Extremely Fine ). Most of the time I use EF but sometimes I find myself saying XF .So as far as I'm concern it doesn't matter what you call it we all know it means the same thing .

I see those all the time and a few more of approximately the same meaning. Lots of dealers use choice fine, choice exfine, etc. Just lots of ways to make you think the coin is better than just fine.

I prefer EF, I think because that's what I used as a kid 200 years ago.

Quote: So, is it a soda, a cola, or a pop? Where I come from, it's just called a "cold drink." I usually denote XF for extremely fine, but sometimes revert to EF if that's what the topic initiator (whether live or online) is using. Edit: Quote: I prefer EF, I think because that's what I used as a kid 200 years ago. I always assumed that every coin was still uncirculated when the Frog was "Coin Tadpole"...

I was under the impression that EF was the British grade and XF was the American grade.
In any case, I'm more familiar with XF (not really sure why), so I use that.

I voted XF for the same reason that plus-sized T-shirts are labeled XL/XXL/XXXL and not EL/EEL/EEEL. It's just intuitive.

I used to say EF, but after starting to deal with certified coins, I switched over to XF.

Quote: And my favorite pop is Pepsi Cola John gets it. As to the topic, either is fine, but I prefer XF.
