Thanks biggfredd: Here is a closer look of the "Goatee' This is a " Struck Through Grease" error- it could still grade high.

Just noticed scuff marks on the cheek- forget the 67! How about a 65? Image: Scuffmarkcheek.jpg60.43 KB

Hi Chuckster, I think I see some slight discoloration on Washington's neck and jawline and on the eagle's thighs. This looks like the effect of light wear from circulation. I find it difficult to grade clad coins because the Cu-Ni alloy is hard and resists wear much better than silver, plus it retains some luster even when wear is present. Nevertheless, I think this coin might not even make a mint state grade at a TPG. The PCGS value guide gives a value of $220 for this coin in MS-67. If it really could get MS-67 (or better!) from PCGS it would be worth having it graded. If it however came back as MS-65 or lower it would basically be a waste of the grading fee, IMO.

The first clue on grade on a coin like this is where it was found ,,out of a roll of circulated coins the coin is circulated .
the best you could hope for is AU-58 .
the pictures bear that out ,lite wear on the high points both obverse and reverse (note the eagles breast)and the hair above the ear and cheek on the obverse .
My estimate AU-55

Thanks Totally agree. If this wasn't close to a possible MS67- NO WAY its getting sent to any TPG'S Not worth the return at all.

I had a FLAWLESS 1996-D Washington quarter that I thought was an MS67-68 to PCGS. Came back 65! I have several dealer friends who say PCGS was wrong. These guys have been grading for years and are all PNG/ANA LM dealers. Who knows? The TPG's are in it to make $$ is all I can figure.

Can you find uncirculated coins in rolls of circulated coins? If a coin has been in circulation, is it possible for it to still be of a Mint State quality?

Hi Coinblogger, It sure is possible to find MS coins in circulation, at least in terms of what the third-party graders may say! Years ago I received a 1979-D quarter in change from a snack machine. It had a missing obverse clad layer which made it a fairly valuable error coin. I sent it to NGC for grading and they gave it an MS-63! (I believe I was buying a bag of Planters nuts from the snack machine, so I literally got this coin for peanuts ). The Mint State judgment depends on whether the coin has visible wear and whether the luster is intact over the design high points. If an MS coin is "gently" circulated before a collector plucks it from a roll (or a change slot!) it may still earn an MS grade from a TPG.
