Hello I'm relatively new to coin collecting and I've been collecting anything that catches my eye or has an interesting story behind it so of course kept all 83 and 82 coins of all denominations. I was just looking through what I have and found what appears to be a misplaced "d" mint mark on the head side of the coin. It's located in the top left after the t in trust and between Jefferson's forehead. If I'm not seeing things is this a rare find? Is it even possible to be real because I've yet to find a error of this kind on this specific coin. Any input you have would be highly appreciated. I hope I posted this right it's my first time posting. I had to get opinions on this one..thank you

Properly oriented pictures would help.

I'm guessing it is a strike through of grease or debris of some type.

Value? Not much, in my opinion. Others may have a difference of opinion.

Keep looking !

Oriented:

Put the picture so that the top of the head is toward the top of the screen. Also, crop the picture so that only the coin shows. it really helps.

@FD69, first welcome to CCF. Second, when I rotate, enlarge, and enhance your pic, I can see the area that you are describing. It looks like damage that is vaguely D-shaped to me.

I had to turn my monitor on it's side to see your photo better. I suggest not using your bare hands on coins you want to save. Could leave finger prints on the coin and that could end up being there forever. And as to misplaced MM, probably not.

Agree, just a coincident circulation mark. Use the Preview feature to check the orientation of your pics before posting.

I hope you're not considering placing that in an album. If you need a BU '82D, I'd

be happy to send...nevermind, I saw your post count, stick around!

If the marks are incuse on a coin, then there is about a 99% chance it is damage from circulation. There are incuse marks on coin that are not PSD, but collectable. but as I mentioned above they occur about 1% of the time. If it were an additional 'D' then it would be raised on the coin not incuse because if would have to occur on the die.

Note the disclaimer on this site about this die number. But that is the only way there could be an extra 'D' from the die, it would be raised. People often tamper with coins adding a counter punch to them. But to a true collector, they are just a damaged coin. No premium for these. Non collectors go bananas over stuff like that. Thus all the people getting burned on non collector stuff on ebay all the time.
