I have scoured ebay and other marketing platforms but have not been able to find a price on MS65FS grade War Nickels better than this at the moment. I am not buying them for the silver content but rather for the history and the fact that my grandfather was a WWII vet. Do you think these will appreciate in value? Is this a decent price or should I hold off? Input is appreciated.

If you research the price history, you will find the prices have declined over the last 10+ years.

First, (in my opinion) don't ever put the words "coins" and "investment" in the same sentence. Buy the coin for the history, your hobby or because you like the coin. Coins are rarely a part of an investment portfolio.

I see. Maybe I'll just grabe one or two for the family and call it a night then :)

Since these coins are readily available in all war-time dates and not particularly expensive, it may be more interesting to put together a raw (ungraded) but nice uncirculated set of each of the wartime years and mintmarks. Just a thought.

To end up with a small fortune after investing in coins, start with a large fortune

Buy on weakness and grit your teeth after the purchase if you feel that the market will continue to decline.

Most successful investors, however, realize that there will most probably be a time that is more optimal to sell for a profit.

Just because the last 10 years were not that great for these nickels don't count on this currently unparalleled improving economy to produce the same end results.

Good luck

I used to be on the other side of the fence on this topic. Now that I've been in this a little while I get it. Do it for the love of the hobby. Making a little profit here and there Can be an unexpected bonus.

Not to say there aren't collectors out there that are educated enough to buy a good deal and make a profit.

Edit: I like the idea of putting together a nice set of them from the different mints.

I'll put in a devils advocate opinion. I find the base of buyers of 35% jeffersons is lower then everthing else. You can get 35% nickels at or below melt making them a easier pickup at lower spot. I enjoy buying them at lower melts and when silver goes up you can short sell it. War Nickels are the only constitutional silver or bullion I find you can short sell like a stock

But not in MS-6FS, which is what he is looking at.

I've seen what look like nice 11-coin BU sets in lucite holders for under $100 on ebay. Not that I'd buy one, but the OP may like something like that if slabbed MS-65 FS is of secondary interest.

If these are the coins you want, and you know they are a good deal, buy them. But as an investment? Who knows?
