Any info on this coin is greatly appreciated. I want to send it to NGC for grading and attribution. However, neither NGC nor PCGS shows any in their census, and ANACS shows two with very little information.
Thanks, Mike

I could be wrong here, But that looks like Machine Doubling, Or possibly Die Deterioration Doubling. Lets see what the pro's are saying these days.

Hi,

I am sure that the coin is a doubled die. Unfortunately, it is not one that I am familiar with.

Thanks,
Bill

It would be interesting to see a normal date and the date posted above to see if the date is actually doubled/wider or if the letters marks are just die movement/strike doubling as proof coins are struck multiple times. The images would help to make an overlay.

Thanks for all the replies so far. Here is my date again and a date from a PCGS PR69.

Well I did an overlay and it looks close to the same size. A couple of factors make it hard to be sure. One is that the light is coming in multiple directions. The first image glare a West direction and a Northeast direction. The second image shows a South and Northwest direction of light sources. Glare can make an image look wider. A second factor I see on your coins is die wear. The first image has more wear than the second image. Look at the device under the 1. Note the weakness on the top of that design. Also you can see die flow on the first one that is not as noticeable on the second image. So an overlay wasn't conclusive. I checked my collection and that is the year I didn't have that one. 8( But I still find it interesting. When I did a grid on the two images the smaller image made it hard to see detail, but it appeared wider on the last digit and a small appearance on the lower west side of the last digit looked interesting. The mark on the device that was weaker had a mark that looked interesting, but I may be a nick from another coin or doubling. So I'm still not sure either way on this coin as of now. Probably a closer look on just the digits of both dates might help more if you can do that. So don't give up yet on this one.

Nothing to be unsure about. The coin in the first post in this thread is clearly a doubled die, no question about it. Whether it is a known doubled die or a new discovery is the only real question, and one I cannot answer. I don't know Franklin half dollar doubled dies.

There is also no Machine Doubling or die wear on the coin.
