My gut feeling is this is a damaged S punch.
I have posted a 1971 with a very similar mark, and the experts here thought that was the cause.

One way to tell if it is from a damaged punch is to check other denominations from the same year. They would also have the same damaged punch mark till they replace that punch. But that is my answer also. Damaged punch. Other Cents also would have the same marks even though they come from different dies.

UPDATE: Looking at the one photographed sameple on coppercoins.com, it may be possible that this one also has the seperation to the north and its MDS/LDS so that its worn smooth. I would need a clearer picture to be sure.

I have many 1971S mint marks that looks like that - it's not the result of a repunch.

It's just a part of the punch. That punch was used through 1974 when it was changed out for the 'beveled slab' style mintmark that is better known as the 1979S type 1 mintmark.

In fact, it is possible to find 1974-S cents with both mintmark styles.

I see what you all mean, I just looked at a 1973S with the same mint mark.
Thank you for the information.
