In England banknotes are changed quite frequently and old designs are withdrawn about a year after new ones are introduced (although you can still exchange them at the Bank of England). The oldest English notes still in circulation are £20 notes with Andrew Bailey's signature and an AA prefix, which date from 2007...
I once got a 1950 $20 bill when changing some currency, probably before my first trip to Boston in 1991, but it wasn't in great shape and I couldn't afford to put $20 aside in those days, so I just spent it.
I had a 1977 $1 bill among my tips last year when I took some US cruise passengers on a tour bus excursion. I spent it in Houston, TX in February during my short layover on my way back from my Australian holiday.
I went to a bank in Orlando, FL on my last real vacation to the USA in 2014 and changed $20 into $2 bills: the oldest ones were dated 1976. I've also had a 1976 $2 bill as a tip when guiding.

At my age I've come across many early notes, of course (gold certificates were still circulating when I was a kid), but had no interest in keeping them until I got involved in paper money collecting in the early '90s. Since then, this is the only cool note I've found in circulation in all those years -

Oldest I've pulled was a crisp 1969 $1 bill. I've got a friend however who does accounting for a business who pulled a 1923 Silver Certificate that someone used to pay with.

Probably my oldest, picked from a local gas station I frequent. I really like the old car on the reverse, too bad they don't do that anymore.

I forgot to say that my 1928-B series 5$ note was also redeemable in Gold. I would like to get the gold in 5 one $ gold pieces. or face in silver or other coins of the era.

Quote: Remarkable that notes printed before WW II are still floating around! . I think one of the cool things about living in the US is that there's such a huge quantity of notes circulating out there -that it is possible to find the odd very old series like the ones "garys64wildcat" listed. Great topic/question btw. Finding old notes "in the wild" was what pulled me into this hobby (also the fact that my brother got all my grandparent's coins!). As a teen, working at a car wash in the late Seventies, there would still appear the odd 1954 series. They mostly looked like the one attached below. I had heard about a "Devil's Face" in the original series but never found one (actually printed in 1954) but noticed asterisks printed in front of the serial numbers of our 1969-1975 multicolored series (and started to put those aside too).
