I am not sure, I wanted one of these for a hole filler in my Canadian Colonial Tokens collection for many years and settled on this one.
I am seeing the less common more rectangular bar in the center and the O's in BOLTON look round.
The ampersand is hard to tell but it also looks more slanted.
My book tells me that the large counterstamp is more valuable.
I'd like a proper attribution from you guys.

Is this MT-2A1 or MT-2A2? Thank you and please elaborate.

I would guess that it is probably a G-4 grade Merchant Token and not subject to Large Cent grading standards now that it has been altered.

Thank you very much!

That's the small Bolton, MT-2a2. One way to tell is to draw a line up the back (left) of the &. On the small it is parallel and almost in line with the V of Devins. On the large the line points to the bottom of the I. See page 252, 9th ed, Charlton Canadian Colonial Tokens.

I am no expert on D&B tokens, but I would not assume this is G4. While the underlying coin may have been G4 when counterstruck, the counterstrike looks fresh to me. If sent to ICCS I am really not sure at all what the would say. But I bet the grade would be a lot better than G4. Perhaps a token grading expert will chime in.
