Hello,

I am still very much a newby here but I am enjoying reading and learning as I go along.

My question today is- How do you clean a coin that has dirty marks or areas on it, without ruining the look or value of the coin? I have what I believe to be a very nice 1968 S red Lincoln Penny but it does show some dirty areas on both sides of the coin.

I will post pictures so people will be able to see to what I am referring to. Regardless, in no way does this coin look like it is 51 years old.

Thanks in advance for your help!

The only two proven safe ways, would be using 100% pure Acetone or Verdi-Care. In your case, using Verdi-Care would be the best option. Other than those two, please don't try anything else.

Errers and varietys,

Thank you for your prompt reply. I will definitely look into Verdi Care.

After using it, How does one know if a coin is nice enough to send in for grading?

Thanks,

@bwies, you could certainly cross post over in the grading section of CCF to get an idea of how this coin might grade. You will want to photograph it outside of the 2x2 for that. I suspect that there are enough marks that it would not make financial sense to slab this coin.

With a coin like this that does not have bad dark spots I would leave it alone . but if you must then try a little Verdi-Care , otherwise just be happy with a real nice Red & Brown Lincoln Memorial .

Good advice from all. I personally don't think think this coin can be improved much, nor is it worth spending money on.

These are quite common. I still have a BU roll of them I've never opened.
