I was wondering how this Jefferson nickel 303152198793 would have this much circulation wear and be a legitimate "Clamshell" to this dramatic degree.
It doesn't make sense to me that it would get passed around in circulation to have this much wear and not get pulled by somebody long before it became this worn.
Maybe somebody recently pried up that split layer by hand to make it more dramatic?

Looks like a Clamshell Lamination to me. I think someone tried to pry it open Post Strike. http://www.doubledimes.com/Clamshell.html

That is an interesting site Errers, and it looks like my theory is correct, it is a pried open circulated clamshell lamination. Does this still hold the value or would it have been better off not pried open?

It still does hold significant value, but it would've been better if it wasn't pried open.

I dont remember which TPG it was, but I've seen a clamshell w/the missing piece aside it, in a holder.

The piece & host coin were supposedly found apart, in a bag.
Also, it had a hefty price tag.

That is a nice one! I usually think of "clamshells" as clad coin separations. This is a nice lamination.

Clam shells affect the edges of the coin.
Tinkered-With-Clamshell-Lamination-War-Nickel?
This is a lamination that is peeling from the rim of the coin inwards.

Thank you everyone for the input.

I did bid on this after I asked the seller:

Quote:
Hi, Just how fragile do you think that split layer is? It isn't in danger of getting broken off with packaging and shipping issues is it? Thanks!

The seller replied:

Quote:
Hello: We package our items safely and securely, so don't worry about that. There is a little loss of the layer at the edge, but
that probably happened long ago. It's still an excellent example.
Thanks for the interest!
Take care.
Sincerely,

But if anyone here outbids me, I really don't care.

Well, I won it and paid. All my errors & varieties in US coins are probably 95% as Jefferson nickels.

I think my errors include a Centered Broadstrike, a triple curved clip, a single curved clip, a 20% off center and now this clamshell lamination.
My regular varieties are a 1939 Double Die REV, 1942 D over Hor D, 1943 P 3 over 2, 1943 P Doubled Eye, 1944 Henning,
1945 P doubled die REV, 1946 D over inverted D, 1949 D over S, 1954 S over D and a couple 1955 D over S.
I also have a number of more dramatic re-punched mintmarks and double and triple dies.
And I have the 1971 no S Proof.

Reminds me of another error coin I have an image of:
Tinkered-With-Clamshell-Lamination-War-Nickel?
But this one folded over after the strike.
