This was in my husband's Dansco book of Morgans.. he had a separate written list where he had "graded" this at XF. I'm first to admit his "grading" has been off on a few of his coins, but my research indicates this coin is often counterfeited... He collected coins for 50 years, so I have no idea when/where he got this coin. Should I send off to have graded/authenticated? I don't want to waste the money if experts here can tell if it screams "fake"... thanks...

In your 4th picture down, the seam around the edge of the coin (at the bottom of the picture) looks kinda suspicious. Almost like an 1894 O or S was milled out and a P mint coin reverse was then filed down and fitted in to the hollowed out coin.

Nothing would surprise me.

Here's a link to the VAM listing for the only business strike die pairing. The date position appears correct but I can't make out anything beyond that but I must admit I don't like the surface appearance of the lower reverse. http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.c...1894-P_VAM-3

I can almost make out the key diagnostics of a genuine 1894 from your pictures, but sharper closeups of two areas would help. Would you be willing to post sharp closeups of these two areas of your coin?

Of particular interest are the letter "R" in LIBERTY and the triangle next to the eagle's left leg (our visual right). A genuine 1894 will have a sharp die polish mark on the right leg of the "R" of LIBERTY and a prominent diagonal "X" shaped die gouge in the lower left triangle near the eagle's left leg (our visual right).

EDIT: The Chinese have discovered the "X" marker, but their fake looks like a first grader went wild with a chisel. It's readily distinguishable.
