I'm getting into coin roll hunting, and recently started for the first time with pennies, but I feel kind of overwhelmed since so many dates have RPMs and DDs (many of them fairly minor) that I don't really know which ones I should be looking for. Ideally, I'd like to use some combination of monetary value and eye-appeal in my decision, but it seems like the most eye-catching DDs don't always correspond to the most visually impressive, and I'm a little overwhelmed by the sheer number out there to learn about.

Have you tried buying a copy of the CherryPickers Guide? It's got in depth photos and tips on IDing the coins and has a solid ROI. |

When I first started, I looked at every coin and both sides. This way takes longer but you are sure not to miss anything. But after a while, I ended up taking information from CHERRY PICKERS, STRIKE IT RICH WITH POCKET CHANGE and websites and compiled a list. Here is what I keep on the desk:   |

The list is of high value or varieties that I like. I was working on an upgraded version of this list. Instead of writing the information, I was using photos from the web and inserted next to dates; quick picture reference.  A working project... I was hoping someone would sell a coin mat like this. |

Also coppercoins.com/ has a pricing guide on their site. But it hasn't been up dated in a while so figure 25% above their prices.

Let me start off by saying...IMO if you are looking into searching for monetary gains,just dump the coins at coinstar. Guys what would you estimate your per hour wage is CRH ? CRH is a hobby for most and the trill of the hunt and find is what matters..I like the list Levelsofmadness made I think we all have a cheat sheet that is similar.. One could search 100's of cents before finding an error that might be valued 3 to 5 dollars..That said...good luck...have fun..and again IMO

Greasy Fingers, I'm not trying to make a profit, but I don't really feel like filling up my collection with hundreds of coins worth less than the 2x2 they're in just because they are technically errors/varieties. Like I said, I'm willing to make an exception if it's a very eye-catching error that just happens to not be worth that much, but I'd rather not have 500 DDs that require a microscope and squinting at just the right angle to see that there's actually something there.

Levelsofmadnes , Not to bash you for your accomplishment. with that list but this is why I don't collect errors or varieties . It's too much for my old brain to handle . I'll stick to collecting coins by date , mint and condition . So again congrats for being an inspiration to all newbie E&R collectors .  |

@ SamCoin..I understand and agree with your last post..for minor errors,rpm and varieties just store in labeled rolls and like you said nicer ones belong in a 2x2 or airtight...good luck in your hunt and may you find some wonderful errors and varieties...can't wait to see some great coins, again best of luck

For me, the bottom line is, "Am I interested in the coin?" There are many coins that aren't "worth" collecting, in a profit-and-loss sense. Some of them just strike me (pun intended) as fun to collect, and that's why I do it. Consider, for example, the Avogadro's Number of minor die chips found on 1950s Lincoln Cents. Just for fun, I started collecting them a few years back. I have a fairly extensive collection of extremely minor die chips that have little monetary value. No, they aren't worth the 2x2s, but I have them in 2x2s anyway. It isn't an investment. It isn't going to rival the Newman Collection. It's just something that is fun. It's also a diversion from my more costly addictions, nickel Three Cent proofs, full strike Buffalos, and PL/DMPL Morgans, and my wife's Canadian collection. I dump my extra minor chips at shows in bags of 10-12 different for $4. Young collectors find them interesting, and it helps grow the hobby. On the variety front, like many I am slowly trying to assemble a variety set of Lincolns from circulated coins. It's the hunt that interests me. Our summers are short and our winters are long, and it's something to do when there is blowing snow and a bunch below zero outside. (It also makes a good excuse to delay my perpetual Honey-do list, but don't let my wife read that!) Just some thoughts from the Old Codger corner. |
