Came across this one and tossed it aside thinking it was
PMD but then picked up and took a closer look at it now I'm not so sure.
The toning is consistent between the affected and unaffected areas, so the damage is at least close to the age of the coin.
It's not squeezed (by pliers or in a vise) because the depressed area is deeper on the reverse than the obverse.
There are no scratches or teeth marks on either side to suggest a tool was used.
The lines around the depression on the reverse are very sharp and crisp, suggesting a strong quick strike as the cause rather than a slow squeezing.
Finally, the obverse has an unusual pattern of lines around the area corresponding to the depressed spot on the reverse.
Any thoughts?
(FYI - the shiny spot in image 4, northwest of the C, is just from my light source. The entire area shows the same level of toning.)
