The VDB does look right, just too bad that it is banged up right on the very crucial identification point. I think $500 is top dollar for this coin $425-$450 is more realistic in my opinion. (Based off of my experience selling a Fine Details [ANACS]) 09 S VDB

Thank you nss-52 and bigsilver. So this coin would probably still get details for damage even if I paid to conserve it and fix the green spot on the front?

Don't worry about sending coins in for TPG'ing as long as you send them by Registered Mail and make sure they are FULLY insured for their value to you. Registered Mail is the safest way to ship coins or valuables that are hard to replace. Is expensive and slower but the chain of custody is pretty secure and very long! Good luck!

Looks genuine to me, reasonable to get it authenticated by a TPG.

Thanks Zurie. What about as far as conserving it? Will it help to remove the verdigris from the obverse, or will the coin still be a details coin anyway, thus making it a waste to try conserving it? What is everyone's opinion on that?

I'm not an expert on determining authenticity of this coin - so leave that opinion to others. I do have some knowledge of your questions of the verdigris - even if perfectly removed with no remaining surface issues (nearly impossible) - the coin will still earn a 'details' grade at any top 3 TPG due to the unfortunate damages at the VDB Which I hope for you would not preclude certification as an authentic example of this much treasured coin.

In that condition, I don't think conservation would be worth the cost, as it will not significantly increase the value. The most important thing is to get it slabbed to establish authenticity, regardless of whether it gets a straight grade or details.

Thanks nickelsearcher and mjd. I think I read that NGC charges 4% of fair market value for conservation. Or maybe there's a minimum. But if it only costs $20 to conserve it, I probably would.

Is it possible that altered coin work can be disguised with excessive artificial wear?

What is everyone's opinion on that? It's worth a shot to see what conservation can do. PCGS will charge $10 extra if they decide to do nothing and for that coin the charge should be about $30 total for grading and conservation. Call them and double check but I believe for conservation AND grading they charge 2% of the coin value with a $30 minimum. Quote: Is it possible that altered coin work can be disguised with excessive artificial wear? Absolutely. That's one of the biggest tricks to hide work that has been done. One of the biggest reasons why certain coins like this S VDB should be graded

Or at least authenticated via ANACS - the best choice here I think.

IMHO go ahead and have it Authenticated but forget about having it conserved . Just doesn't make any sense with a coin in this condition . It will not increase it's value .

Thanks again. Coinfrog, are you saying that ANACS has an option to just authenticate a coin without it saying details?

Can't answer this. They are the least expensive alternative for a definitive opinion. Check their website.
C'mon, you want a straight grade, just do it.
