I have an 1846 Large Cent struck on the wrong planchet. It only weighs 4.6 grams, is very thin and as a result is slightly smaller in diameter. The coin shows good detail. From all appearances it is as originally minted - not messed with other than wear and tear. I tend to think this coin was struck on a Half Cent planchet except it is a little light since a Half Cent planchet weighs 5.44 grams. Though perhaps coin wear accounts for it being a little light in weight now. Any info including values is appreciated. I don't want to send it off to be authenticated/graded unless worthwhile.

Yes, pictures please. Over the years a number of coins escaped undetected on the wrong planchet and are highly collectible. Most bring tremendous premiums over an otherwise normal specimen. On a Half Cent planchet is debatable. The Half Cent weighs 5.44 grams with a diameter of 23.05 millimeters. The large cent, 13.48 grams and 28.5 millimeters. So based on your description the weight is a bit light, diameter perhaps. Only certification will tell. Welcome to the forum! I hope you have a real coin.

Being soaked in acid is MUCH more likely than a wrong planchet especially on an 1846 considering they hadn't made Half Cents since 1835 and didn't start again until 1849.

Without a picture it would be hard to tell. Has the coin previously been graded...if so what is the grade?

It's probably a large cent damaged by it being smashed or cut down.

Condor101 hit the nail right there "they didn't make Half Cents from 39-49 so no planchets would be laying around to be mixed in with large cent production. The mint didn't make the planchets they were supplied by outside sources so I say Chinese or acid until we can see photos of both sides and the edge.

Perhaps the OP has acquired a copperhead's large cent from the Civil War years? These were carried by war protesters. The wearing of these would often start a fight or occasional riot. So, wise protesters took to carry them in their pockets.
