Not an error,split copper plating. Cents are not clad,they are copper plated starting in 1982. Als,there are ladies members here on CCF.

When you see gray on the plating, it is a split plating issue.

What primarily initiates split plating: temp., thickness of plating, out-of-spec Cu %, PMD etc?

Well it is not from the coin getting hot during the strike. John Wexler had the experience holding a fresh struck cent. He waid it was normal temp. (not hot as he even thought) But I'm wondering it this is more often caused by Machine Doubling. Have you ever noticed, you see the split plating more often on coins with MD?
