Possibly plated? Weight will settle the issue. to the CCF!

Yes, likely plated. I have the exact same one that I came across years ago. I can't recall the weight at the moment. I did keep it however just because it really looks like silver. I wonder if the same person plated both.

An instantaneous and easy way to tell without a scale would be to hear the ring of it when dropped onto a hard surface (use common sense - not a great distance that would mar the coins). Then drop a clad quarter. Spinning them on a glass surface also works as the quarter settles the sounds are very different.
It also would not hurt to drop or spin a common date silver quarter to hear for sure what a silver will sound like.

If it WAS silver, it should feel heavier than the 73 not lighter. But "feeling" is NOT a valid way to judge. Without lots of practice it is pretty much impossible to tell a difference in weight of less than 5 grams. Even with a lot of practice, 1 gram is about the minimum you can tell. The difference between a clad quarter and a silver one is about .75 grams.

Probably was plated as mentioned earlier.
Errers and Varietys.

Thank you all for your help. I went for the easy and foolproof check - filing the edge. It is indeed plated. Mystery solved. Makes me want to look through my bags of "silver coins" to be sure they are all actually silver. Thanks again!

Not recommended if you really believe you might have the real thing!
