Hi. I'm not sure if it's okay to ask this kind of question but I guess I'll find out! So I have 119 out of 221 Barber coins in Whitman Albums. They're all G to VG, but maybe a few are Fine, I'm not sure due to limited experience grading them. I have 38/74 dimes, 33/74 quarters, and 48/73 halves. Other than the obvious good ones such as the 1914 and 1915 halves, what would be the max I should ask for common worn coins? Thanks. Edited by Joecontois 07/25/2019 9:37 pm

Make sure you are selling them for the right reasons. Once they are gone it will cost you more to collect them again.
Most coin shops will only pay you a little over melt for circulated Barbers unless they are better dates.
You might try selling some of them here on the forum. It's worth a try. Good luck!

Two words. Student loans. But also, it would cost so much more to complete the sets and so I'm thinking I should just turn around now. And, I wasn't aware I could sell through the forum. I only saw the links to member's ebay listings.

Nice. Thanks Spence. I scrolled through the home page looking for something like that but didn't see it, so thank you!

Sorry to hear that you're having to sell for loans. I had to sell off a large portion of my collection 20 years ago, when I fell upon hard times. I've always regretted selling anything in my collection, whether it be coins, old fishing lures or arrowheads.Three difficult sets to complete for certain, especially the quarters. I have a complete dime set put together off ebay about 10 years ago, and a complete set of halves bought at coin show last year. I'd take them off your hands, if you were in the Houston,TX area.

Nice. I'm in Eastern CT. And I don't need to sell. I'm just considering it because I've had a change in interests. My main collecting interests are the ones in my signature, and I'm not as attached to the Barber coins. I would rather pay down my bill, or trade for bullion, or for key dates.

I think you would do better selling here than on ebay.

I think for the common date coins, a slight premium above melt is probably achievable - maybe melt plus 10 to 20%. Separate out the better dates from the common ones; sell the better dates individually and bundle the commons into lots and sell them is the approach I would take.

So I'm currently looking at about 15X face for common Barber coins?

Just skimming some completed ebay auctions, I saw rolls of Barber quarters going for 16-17x face, dimes around 14-15x and halves around 17-18x face. Of course there would be fees on ebay and most of those also had free shipping but that gives you some idea of where they might fall price wise. Selling yourself of course; you'd get somewhat less from a billion dealer or coin store. I think if you priced them reasonably here people would likely snap them up.

Can anyone explain why the greysheet lists the common Barber halves at $12 which I interpret to be wholesale price, but it seems like you guys have said that they retail for less than that? Thanks.

Bid or ask prices? But in general the greysheet is nothing more than a guide. Plenty of things in it consistently sell for above their prices and others below it. They don't update prices weekly on everything or anything like that either. You might be able to find a dealer who does everything based off of sheet and get more money, but online most people go off past sales to some extent and the added availability online puts downwards pressure on prices for common things
