Good find. Do you know when and where it was made? I like these British medals but usually I'm unable to get information on their issuance.

These were made in 1827 but the maker is not known. The style suggests that Kettle & Sons may have had a hand in the OPs medal.
There were quite a few diffent medals and medalets issued. This link gives more info:

Safaga, first off,
George-Canning-Medal
I've no particular expertise or knowledge regarding the specific makers of British medals during this period. The proliferation of "Conder" tokens three decades earlier attests to how many competent diesinkers there were in the United Kingdom outside of The Royal Mint ready to meet any demand for this sort of thing.

Many thanks for the helpful and knowledgeable replies re the circumstances of the issuance of this George Canning medal. Are there any reference works that catalog these British medals of the 19th century? I've examined the catalogs on British medals at the ANA library, and none were anywhere complete in their coverage.
