What do you guys think, is this a peel, grease or planchet defect?

Not experienced with these type of errors/varieties yet. Wait for more knowledgeable members.

Great coin!

Your coin has a lamination on the reverse between CENTS and STATES. You also have a very long die crack. I can't quite tell if the crack is complete through the dome and the front portico. If so, it could be a bisecting rim-to-rim die crack. One is known for the 1940-S, RRDC-5c-1940S-01R. That crack is to the east of yours, so you might have a new listing if the crack is complete.

Awesome find!

Hard to follow crack through dome and steps, but it just might be rim to rim...good luck...nice coin

I think you have a Rim To Rim Die Crack and a Struck Through Grease/Debris issue in "STATES".

The die crack is strong in the recessed area between the "C" of CENTS and the second "S" of STATES. Wouldn't that suggest that the flaw occurred pre-strike?

Another thought. There is also weakness on the "US" of PLURIBUS and the "UN" of UNUM. That might suggest minor displacement of the anvil (reverse) die at the crack. It would be hard to imagine very much movement of an anvil die, though.
Rest in Peace

Tough call on that. To some collectors, they would shy away as they prefer BU coins for their collections. But an error collector might enjoy the condition of the coin. Looks like there was a grease issue on the strike that hazed the coin, filled some devices a bit. So it would be a tough coin to put a price on.
