I've just inherited a coin collection and I'm cataloging all of the coins. Came across this one. Cannot tell the year by looking at it, as the last digit is malformed. It does not look like wear, since nothing around that spot is worn. I have searched on every forum to see if there was a die error some time in the 50's that carried forth for many coin strikes -- but could not find one. Anyone have any idea whether this coin is valuable? (which I realize is in the eye of the beholder)

PSd. The last digit in the date took a well placed hit, causing the metal to get pushed over and flattened.

Welcome to CCF! GREAT pictures for first post. I agree with EV. Date looks like 1957 to me.
Cheers

to CCF. It is a Roosevelt dime not Eisenhower. And I agree it took a hit. John1

What ever affected it was mechanical, like a counting or vending machine. What makes me think that? Not that the last two digits are parallel to the rim. So what altered it was mechanical.

Ok, so clearly I need to brush up on not only my coins, but my history... Thanks for the insight. I'm finding going through these coins really interesting. I have a stack of Morgan dollars that (as I research) will likely take me months to classify. How would I know from looking at this coin that the defect was a PSD? (Other than just knowing that there wasn't a 1957 die problem.)

Quote:How would I know from looking at this coin that the defect was a PSD? (Other than just knowing that there wasn't a 1957 die problem.) Practice! We see these with some frequency. As @coop explained, when the last digit in the date is garbles by being made parallel to the rim, it is diagnostic for this type of damage.
