came across this 1985 LMC with the EPU throwing me a little, also I see remnants of die clash on the obverse behind Lincolns head.opinions?    |

IF it's a clash mark, then the die had to be rotated 90° when they struck, but it's possible. I did an overlay of the 2 images and rotated the reverse. It does match up with the top edge of the monument.

ok here are closeups of the clash? behind Lincoln's head. can't make out exactly but looks like one of the bays from the memorial. what do you guys think and any opinions on the pics of the EPU, I see very elongated dots and notching on the devices? Click Pictures To Enlarge  Edited by CoinTheTerm

It might be a gouge or die damage. A clash would show the horizontal base line. But as already mentioned, it can't be that as it is 90 degrees off and no other clash is not present. Die polishing would not leave an abrupt end like on this coin . Thus my first diagnosis.

It's always that first dot between the E and P that gets me to..but no spliting on the devices(letters) make me toss them

thanks Greasy and usually I do also but this one either has some notching or some well placed scratches. click on the picture in the OP and take a good look starting at the E

Note all the devices on the reverse are reduced in size, so the die was worked over reducing the fields, also reducing all the devices removing the widest part of the devices base. Thus that is what has happened to this die.

The reason why? There were a lot of die clashes on the 1983-1985 cents. Thus they were over polished, a lot. Over polishing reduces the fields and reduced the height of the devices making them look thinner is size.
