Good morning. I would like to know if there are different varieties for the 1958 d penny. I have 3 coins with the D mint mark in different locations. One is close to the number 9 the other centers between the 9 and the 5 and the last one is closer to the 5.

The mint marks were stamped into the working dies by hand, by mint employees. So there would be as many different locations as to how many working dies were used through out the years run

@tp, first welcome to CCF. Second, good eyes for noticing the difference. Since at this time the mintmarks were added by hand to the die, there is a pretty broad natural variation in their location.

Unless the hand punch is extremely out of place, such as really far from the date, punched two or more times, on or at least touching another design element they do not demand a premium.

However, when you are already tuned in to seeing something unusual you will find goodies to keep. Keep searching. We have folks report neat finds here almost every day.

The neat thing is for the mintmarks in different places is matching variety coins to a certain die number. (but that all stopped in 1990 when the mintmarks are part of the design of the coins.

Strange you should choose the 1958-D LWC. I posted awhile back about the same thing.
I found several variations of the mint mark. I was just curious as to how many there may have been. Below are a few photos of the variations I have in my stash.

we;; every die could have a different location because of the mintmark location was punched into each die. Slight variations of locations, angles and shapes of the mintmarks can happen. (because the mintmark it punched in more than once. Making some larger, smaller and some are RPMs where the punching didn't fall on the same area as the previous mintmark punches:

The RPMs are called variety coins, from the doubling on the mintmarks. These ended on 1989. On the 1990 coins, the mintmarks forward are part of the design.
