Hello Jilly, This dollar looks to be in the About Uncirculated (AU) range. Liberty's cheek and the open field areas look slightly dark which is usually an indication that the coin is slightly worn. Detail is mostly sharp and there don't appear to be any heavy marks or damage. We're always concerned about fake coins here on CCF, especially with all the new fake examples being sold out of China. Your coin looks generally OK, but I'm bothered by the CC mintmark. It appears to be very thick and blunt, not sharply-formed as I would expect. Can you post enlarged shots of just the mintmark area? For comparison, here is a reverse photo of a genuine 1878-CC from a Heritage auction, graded MS-65 (mint state 65) by NGC. Note how the CC mintmark looks thin and delicate compared to the CC on your coin. If I had to make a call just based on your photos, I'd guess that your coin might not be genuine. You should check the weight if possible. A real Morgan dollar in AU grade should weigh very close to 26.7 grams.

Here's a side-by-side. Huge difference in the shape of the mint marks... by the way, Jilly, welcome to the CCF!

I would have a very hard time imaging it to be fake as my mother was a coin collector as long as I can remember and she passed away in 2001 at the age of 72 with this stashed in the safety deposit box, but anything is possible. Thanks for the help and as usual, you are great.

Jilly, I'm not much on grading, but AU appears about right. There's a lot of distortion in the pictures, so this might even be Mint State. As to being a fake, I highly doubt it. Date is in the correct position and broken 4th right star. II3 obverse with B1 reverse. Close CCs. Can't tell the exact Vam# without better photos. Any distinct die chips on the nose? Die gouges on the eye or under bottom lip?

I have attached a couple more pictures of the 1878 morgan...I see a definite difference in the cc mark as noted, but it is definetly a cc.. Image: 1878zoom.jpg52.66 KB Image: 1878edbe.jpg79.57 KB

Ouch!! What a difference a picture can make. Your AU just went down to a VF-XF. Just my opinion of course. Nothing on the close up jumps out at me. Jilly, don't mean to lecture, but never hold a coin between the fingers. Try to hold the coin by the edge. Fingerprints are a NO-NO. If you can get a close up photo of the mint mark, I may be able to give you the Vam#.
