Hi Gang,

This coin was found today in pocket change and seems to be a pretty interesting scenario here.

* The Obverse is a darker grey that usual...look as if it could possibly be a Improperly Annealed Plainchant.

*Reverse...all slick but the door of Monticello

Please help; Identify the variety and value :).

It's just a damaged coin. Nothing in the minting process could have caused this. The reverse looks like it was removed with something that was spinning. I'm not sure if it's flattened or sanded down. The color could be darker due to heat build up during the modification process. I like the look of the reverse.

Do you have a weight on the coin?

I agree. As mentioned by @yokozuna, this is all just damage, but it is cool enough looking that saving this seems like a good option.

Altered. It was struck like that. The weight will be under. Note the full rim on the obverse, there was also one on the reverse when it was struck.

Even the slightest thinness of a planchet will cause a weak strike. But not the rims on the coin above? The rims are weak, thus the planchet was thin, or the strike was weak. On your coin the obverse is strong, the reverse was altered, the full proves that.

Still a very cool looking coin. Looks like it came from a Twilight Zone.
