Just pulled this out of a roll of mixed BU and UNC 1955-S coins. The coin has three die breaks and is extremely rare and highly sought after. It looks a lot prettier in hand than in the photos although does have some issues.

Reverse Cud is: CU-1C-1955S-01R
Obverse Interior Die Break is: IDB-1C-1955S-01
Obverse Retained Interior Die Break is: RIDB-1C-1955S-02

Certainly my find of the evening, although still an hour or two to see what else I can turn up.

I haven't seen this one before either. Congratulations on another home run.

Story is that almost every known example of this coin (about 100) was found at once years ago in a single bag. They were sold off to collectors and few have resurfaced. I am lucky to have one in my collection already but they just don't show up most anywhere ever so incredible to find one in a roll.

Hi Grapes, Yeah, the rolls I picked up Thursday have had some things in them, but mostly pretty minor. This is the only one worth significant money although I still have to check all the RPMs and DDOs to see which ones I have and which ones I need. Interestingly, the UNC/BU roll (correctly labeled on the roll) that had this one it is also had six different RPMs and the DDO-001 in it. Now that's a good roll! I pulled this one and replaced it with a nice coin, carded the varieties and will sell off the roll with the varieties as a lot. Whoever gets that thing will have almost a full set of 1955-S varieties in one purchase. Not sure about what I'm doing with this one yet, although it is slightly lesser than the one in my collection so it'll probably end up getting sold off as well.

Tell Gnu that I've got a 72 FS-103 ready for him and will send it through you probably this coming week sometime. I'll try and remember to throw in a 61-D Fs-501 as a surprise (unless he's reading this!)

Why does it look like a Rebel hat?

(Edited image. The original was black and white)
I can't figure this one out with the devices so deep under the area in question. It seems to me if it were a die issue, the letters would be the first to go?

Neat to hear about the first discovery of 100 or so.

I wonder if that group showed any progression of it getting worse or any variance in the examples?

I found one of these about 10 years ago. I'll dig it out and see if it is an exact match as to yours. Cool find!

Very cool. I've never seen this before either. I've been looking at this since last night.
TB can you explain to me how this happened? With a die break I would think GOD WE would have broken off. Could a piece of the die have peeled off? I'm just trying to figure this one out. Thanks.

Yes very cool coin. I never find anything notable in rolls. I've quit buying them for now but it's getting close to Christmas I could splurge!

beechnut,

I am afraid I am not the one to really explain exactly how this occurs, but I can show you some examples.

Most common in 1955, for whatever reason there is set of die breaks that occur on the upper skull area of Lincoln. Not just the very common "cracked skull" stuff, but die breaks. They vary from pretty minor, to the one above which is the most extreme I know of.

In general, they start with a die crack more or less horizontal across the hair (super common), and then progress with a die crack working in an arc above it. At some point the arc closes and you have a closed crack loop, and with enough time this becomes a retained interior die break.

The next part of the sequence, which can occur anywhere along the time line, is that an interior die break (loss of the piece of the die) forms along or in relationship to the horizontal original die crack.

The end result after both of these things happen is a sort of beanie for Lincoln with a bulge across the bottom where the lost die is.

I don't collect these but sometimes pull them out to give to a friend who does. I have two here in a roll and took some photos for examples. Both are 1955-P, again the most common year for this.

Hope this helps a little.
