@eclark3, first welcome to CCF. Second, yes the photo optimizer can have a bit of a learning curve. When I rotate, crop, enlarge, and enhance you pic, it is a bit too pixelated for me to see what is going on with your mintmark. Have you looked on varietyvista.com yet for a match?

ok yes that does look pretty similar, again keeping in mind the lower resolution of the pic of your coin. However, when I do a side-by-side comparison of the two coins, it seems like your mintmark is a little further from the edge of Monticello. Is that correct? In order to be a match, the mintmark would necessarily need to be exactly in the same spot on the field.

Yes, it's further away. Weren't floating mint marks more prevalent when they were hand punched. I'm new to collecting and have a lot to learn. Thanks

Yes no prob. We are all learning here. It is my understanding though that in order for this to be the same RPM, then both sets of mintmarks would need to be in the same spot on the field. Hypothetically, this could be a different D/horizontal D RPM, but that seems less likely. I'm sure others will weigh in over the next several hours, so let's see what they think.

My main focus was inside the d at the top doubling is seen. Just like the link I sent. Agree?

I wish I could get a better picture. But it seems like there is a bit for me to learn about taking pictures of small things. Thanks Spence.

The light your using is adding glare. So you might diffuse the light a bit to reduce the glare and the light source. Not sure what you are using for a light. An image of your setup might help a bit more with suggestions.

Coop, no set up. Just a flashlight, 40x Loupe, and my phone camera. Here's about the best I could get without a glare. Thanks

I'm really wondering if indeed you do have D/horizontal D. The side by side photos seem very similar except for the amount of wear. The zoom on your pic was different so it appears the mintmark is positioned differently, but is it really? It certainly looks like something is under the D, and from what I can see, it looks more like the horizontal D than the other two RPMs known for the year. Not saying take my word for it, but I hope some others will give their opinions as well, because I'd like to hear them too. But I am hopeful for you that it's D/horiz D.
