Poll Question
I'm experimenting with restoration. How am I doing? Have I done enough or should I go further? Thus far I have used olive oil tooth brush and several tooth pics. I expect some flack about the tooth brush but please judge the results. 2 before pics and the rest are after.

I would do an acetone bath and stop. Here is one of my before/after posts http://goccf.com/t/265590, I used verdi-care and a green cactus needle then finished with an acetone bath.

I used the same method on a 1909 VDB with an OBV Cud, came back from PCGS MS62BN here is the link for that one http://goccf.com/t/265585
Rest in Peace

I would have only given that coin a good application of Verdi-Care and called it a day . You just Detailed that coin by what you did .

Go no further. Nice improvement. I do not see any evidence of a "details" coin.

I like the way it looks but stop at this point. Sometimes people go more better too much.

Instead of olive oil, I use mineral oil because it is not organic. If you wish to remove gunk from the devices, try using a green thorn. It will loosen the unwanted stuff, and not push it across the fields. The gunk can have sand in it and can scratch the fields. That is the way I move the gunk from circulated coins only.

Voted Stop there, but would also say No Tooth Brush.
Sometimes you may win and others you may lose. I don't think there is any cut and dried formula, as each coin you try this on will give different results.
Haste will make waste, that's for sure. I have had some success conserving circulated tokens & medals which might be slightly less of a sin than cleaning US coins. I certainly would stick to common coins if you're going to do this.
A toothbrush is just going to retain some debris and scratch the surface as it drags the dirt across the coin.
A soaked soft toothpick tip and patience is probably the better way to go or coops "green" thorn is probably much better.

I really like what you've done.

Question: Would a Q-Tip cotton swab cause damage?
That way you could always use a fresh swab and throw away, not risking old trapped gunk from a tooth brush being re-introduced.
Just wondering.

I use a worn out one that is very soft. It can loosen little globs of gunk.

Always practice on non valuable coins to get the procedure down first.
