I agree:
A no-no.

Why bother with alligator clips? There are many other potentially non damaging ways to keep a coin still and stable enough for photography.

There are some real whizz kids here in the CCF, that can show you how to produce superb coin pictures.

To avoid fingerprint stains,
handle top grade coins and proofs by the edge with a gloved fingers, lesser grade coins by the edge.

OK to handle ancient coins any way you want, but never drop an ancient silver coin - it may shatter, due to silver crystallization - shattering never a problem with modern coins.

It is beyond me why the person did not just lay the coin on a flat surface, use a cell phone camera and crop the picture. Aside from the clips, the magnifier just has added some distortion to a too-small picture.
