This is an odd one. I bought it because it's graded as a 1954S but is actually a 1940S. It took me a while to notice the error. There's a hole right around his temple. What do you guys think?

@wilburton, seeing the wrong coin slabbed makes me nervous--have you yet confirmed that this is the real item?

I do see that dent in Abe's temple. It looks incuse though--is that right? Finally, I see some nice ghosting on the rev.

Slab says 1954-S, coin is 1940-S?

They mess up on these slabs from time to time. I have a couple from PCGS, this is the first one I've seen from NGC.

Very cool !
The only one like it that I have found is a 1941-D in a PCGS 1941-S slab. Good part is that it was a ddr-002 !

While there are errors on the coin as mentioned above, the real error is having the wrong coin in the wrong slab! What do they do to try to fix this problem? How rare is this mix-up? If I have a ultra rare coin that they mis-slabbed and I received back a different coin, I'd be hopping mad! I assume they have guaranteed insurance for such problems, yes?

I think they do merclover. I had a similar experience with PCGS. They didn't attribute a coin I sent in correctly, I argued with them and they told me to send it back. I had to pay for attribution again and when they realized they messed up they never charged me for it!

Also you can see Feeder Finger Damage vertically on the reverse as well:

Did you look up the coin on PCGS? to see if the grade is correct?
