Interesting idea for a thread! Before the current vogue for polymer banknotes, a few countries made notes from a synthetic material called Tyvek. Here is a an Isle of Man Tyvek £1 note issued in 1978: ... and a Tyvek Costa Rica 20 colones dated 1983: As far as I know, the only other country to use Tyvek notes was Haiti, but I don't have a specimen. Maybe someone on the Forum has one?

@oriole - ok - here they are: This is 'thick' leather, at least 3mm thick, that could be used to repair a lady's heel. It had a face-value of 25 goldpfennig. There was a slightly bigger piece that was for a man's heel which had the face value of 50 goldpfennig. The real treat is the 1.5goldmark piece, which could be used to repair a shoe sole! These ORIGINAL leather pieces date from 1923. (Some limited edition modern commemorative pieces were issued in 1989)

The Poessneck leather pieces are made from the tough cow leather. The finer leather Austrian pieces from Osterwieck are made from the soft underside part of the leather when the top part has been removed. Those thinner leather pieces are very soft and supple, where as the thick leather is tough and extremely rigid.

How about this piece! A tea-dolley made from '2 uncut and unstitched' 50m silk pieces, issued by the Towns Savings Bank of Bielefeld, Germany. This very rare piece has a lace edging / border and obviously has seen normal use as a household item. It could possibly be the only example in the world. I never owned it but took a scan when I came across it somewhere........years ago now.
