Sure looks like a struck-through-object to me, and a pretty awesome one too. If it were circulation damage you would expect the big dent to include the rim, but it stops there. It's also too random a shape for someone to have purposely carved it (unless maybe they were starting on a hobo and changed their minds). It's interesting how it appears that some of the jacket lines are 'there' but weaker and down in the trench.
Just really cool, and I agree it's crazy that nobody put it away in all these years. Or maybe they did, but then someone found it after they died or whatever, and just considered it a penny.
Where did you find it? In a roll?

to CCF. Looks like a struck through to me and a nice one. 2x2 worthy.

I'm leaning more to a lamination error. IMHO

I'm thinking lamination issue, but can't rule out strike-through. If you find the coin interesting, do keep it. The coin may not sell for $750K, nor become a YouTube sensation, but it is a good example--a fun coin to have.

I'm with the delam group mainly because you can still see some of the design showing through.
If it was struck through, this area would be smoother.

The difference between the two choices is this: Note the ghost image at the bottom of the lamination? If this were a struck through, the ghost image would have been erased.

Thank you everyone . I was watching a little YouTube looking at errors and saw a struck through 2017 penny and thought that was it . I will have a look at laminations now . I really like this site very nice people #128515; . I have a couple cookie tins of copper pennies I've saved over the years going through them looking for winners .
