Why Did NGC Grade This Peace Dollar MS-66?

KingFridayXIII New Member United States 45 Posts	Posted 02/16/2020 11:47 am I've been learning a lot about grading coins on here but things like this confuse me. How does this grade a 66 with that big ugly brown dot on the obverse? Aren't things like that supposed to be accounted for in the grading somehow? Slider23 Pillar of the Community United States 4469 Posts	Posted 02/16/2020 12:42 pm I am not defending NGC's grading on this coin. The big brown spot does effect the eye appeal part of the grade, but eye appeal is only part of the grading criteria. NGC may have deducted something from the grade to arrive at MS66. The coin may technically be a MS66, but this is the type of coin most buyers will stay clear of because of the brown spot, so the coin's value will decrease. This coin also has white spots that may have came from dipping when someone tried to remove the brown spot. Report this Post to the Staff

kanga Pillar of the Community United States 5825 Posts	Posted 02/16/2020 4:26 pm I think the coin has been in that slab for quite a while. And slabs are NOT totally sealed. Possibly poorly stored and this could be a result. Or it's from the deep South and got caught in a hurricane. I did not look up the slab number but noticed that the first part is only 7 digits rather than 8 as currently used. Older slab. Report this Post to the Staff
