I recently pulled out this coin and photographed it for another thread ... It's one of the handful of slabbed coins I own.

We've seen a lot of comments here and there on CCF about the seeming lack of rhyme or reason on grading of older hammered coins.
So, just as another data point for the regulars who hang out here, what would you have graded this one?

No clue how to grade these, but I'll take a stab for the learning experience. VF-35.

@tdz, what scale are you using? I like the remaining detail and would give it 4/5 or so.

It was graded by one of the US TPGs, so I guess that's the Sheldon scale?

I like that we already have guesses from VF to AU ... which fits with our other discussions out here.

I'll say XF-45, think I see some luster in the letters on Picture #1. Don't know if it's Obv. or Rev.

This coin got a generous AU-53 from NGC (not my submission).

There is no luster to speak of, but a very attractive even patina that shows pretty well in the photos. I would have guessed XF.

I consider the AU "generous" by comparison to this UNC details example: https://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotv...3da51217318f286610081041b

AU-53 was a gift. I'd be at EF-45 on this one.
