I am stumped to find so many quarters with glue, shellac or burn marks on them. Not to mention deliberate defacing.
Any clues out there?
I do understand why many are painted red.

When you say, "so many", are you talking about 1 in a thousand? Less/ More?

If the coin is damaged,spend it. The one who did the damage did it, when he figured out he could make it look like a mint error. A damaged coin is still worth face. Spend them.

I've hear they use red painted quarters in a Juke box, so they can be returned to the business so they can still have music when they empty the machines.

When I was a kid playing pinball, I would lose a quarter ( not register in the game ) , they would then give me a red quarter so they would know which one they gave out for free.

When I tended bar in the late 1970's, we used the red house quarters for the pool table , especially for pool league. That way, when Guido came to empty the coin box, he would give the reds to the owner first, before splitting the rest of the coins. Always a 50/50 split. Nice guy, that Guido. Wonder whatever happened to him. |

Regardless, I cannot fathom why the burn marks, as if a cigarette was snuffed out, are done at all. And the glue is a complete mystery as well. Surely, in this day and time, they were not glueing string to the coin in order to "fish" it back out of a vending machine! Quote:

The painted quarters were given to the store "manager" so that he/she could "prime" the jukebox - enticing customers to do likewise. |
