Hi
This is my first time posting and coming for help.
I recently got my hands on this coin. I took the gamble on it due to the price. It seems as if this coin has been cleaned/dipped. Any help determining whether its real or counterfeit would be appreciated.

Meiji 3 (1870)
Diameter: approx 3.85/3.9 cm
Weight: Approx 26.39 g
Edges: Reeded
Nonmagnetic

If this coin was authentic, it would easily be a $1000 coin.
Weight tests and magnetism tests will cull out 95% of the bad quality fakes.
Real coins weigh 26.9568 grams, and since your piece is uncirculated, they should weigh around the same amount, give or take about 1/20 of a gram (not sure what Weight Tolerance was for these)
If it passes both tests then you can perform a metallurgic test.

At a glance, it appears to have a lot of lustre on it as if it were an uncirculated coin, yet the weight is also off by half a gram. I also don't like the lack of detail on the dragon.

Struck counterfeits for this coin do exist.

I would personally stay away from this coin.

There are machines that can determine approximate silver purity without scratching the item.

I don't like the look of it. It looks like the super counterfeits appearing in the last 2-3 years. Can you show a photo of the edge?

Thanks everyone!

Yeah the lustre made me think it looked uncirculated but the detail in the dragon made me think otherwise and as if it was worn. I'm not sure how much weight loss can account for worn coins.

I've also attached pictures of the edge!

I am of the opinion that this is the newer version of super counterfeit.

If you bought it dirt cheap on ebay - there would have been a reason why. A Fine condition of this coin easily exceeds 100+.

I would ask for your money back.
