I used to collect coins when I as younger but then I found comics and brought several copy of XMEN when they first came out and sold them for a few thousand and came back to coins. My love now is error coins and want to learn as much as possible. And I was wondering how do decide if it is a error or damage when it is something you never seen before or something totally new?

@dd, welcome back to numismatics. I recommend you look back on the past several dozen threads in this sub-forum to get a handle on what is and what isn't an error. As you gain a little confidence, try posting your finds here. We would be happy to provide our opinions. For sure we haven't seen everything, but there are multiple folks here who have mint errors as their collecting focus.

The first thing you need to do is to learn as much as you can about exactly how coins are produced. The bette you understand that the more you can recognize what is and what is not an error, and when you see something "off" you will know whether or not it is something that can be produced during the minting process.

Here is a site that will keep you reading for months then:
http://www.error-ref.com/
All the legit errors. If they are not covered here, then it might be PSD. (Post-Strike-Damage)
