Looks like an under weight copper planchet. Thus the strike was weaker. Could you show the edge with a 1981 cent and a zinc cent? That way we can see if it is thinner. But it appears that way. Keeper.

Coop, I already mentioned the weight. It's 2.5 grams in the title. It's zinc.

I think Coop may be suggesting that it could be tapered with a minor/no reduction in weight. If the edge is thinner, it could be a tapered planchet. I own an example of such.

I'm leaning towards an adjustment strike. The rims are almost lost and the weakness on the reverse is across the center of the design. Heavy grease strikes usually have really deep rims with the grease pushed to the outside edge. Nice error!

Yes... is the planchet tapered... since weight is normal?
Or just big globs of gunk the only factor?

If it is missing plating, why is the color not zinc? If it is copper, it should weigh 3.11 grams. That is why I'm wanting to see an edge by edge shot.

I see what you're saying Coop. I'll do it tomorrow for you. Sorry if I couldn't respond right away. I was watching Better Call Saul on Netflix with my family. I'll get onto it as soon as possible.

LOL David.
Regardless, it is pretty neat. I lean towards a planchet error instead of a striking error, but hey, I've been wrong on many an occasion.

Update: Here's the new pictures. First coin, 1982 zinc, second coin, 1981 copper, third coin, 1982 zinc. 1981 copper, 1982 zinc (error coin) in middle, and 1982 zinc, stacked together. Also, my error coin is zinc. It weighs 2.5 grams, and you can see plating bubbles, so it's obviously not copper.
