The designers initials look funny on this one... any ideas?

1983 was notorious for Very Late Die state strikes. Lots of Nickels from that year showed heavy Die Deterioration. The initials look like that, because the obverse die was well worn and was starting to break down.

Also note on all the fields the die flow lines are present on those areas. The area near the initial is also showing flow lines starting next to the edge of the bust. These fields were probably polished several times in order for the deeper devices to be affected. Note all the devices seem weakened and thinning looking because of previous polishing. So as mentioned it is a VLDS die, even though were seen strong die flow lines on the fields. But there are some healthy ones on your coins reverse.
