Well, I did it. What do you think of my new acquisition? Could this be a double date? Edited by wwhitman 10/26/2008 6:05 pm

Without better pictures, I'm afraid there is not much that can be done to help you. Unless you bought this coin at very low price, I would consider sending it back. I know of no 1886 coins with heavy die polishing lines on it. Are those heavy cleaning lines or just the photo ?

WWhitman, I can neither confirm nor deny based on the photos. Here's the diagnostic photo from VAMWorld to compare ... Look for the thick bar at the base of the 1, doubling on the lower loop of the first 8, and the curl remnants of a 6 inside the lower loop of the 6.

Another pass at the date. Disregard the color shift.

I don't believe this is a VAM-20 myself but definately a harshly cleaned coin

Hello, 1st, is this coin wet or something like that?It almost looks like it was varnished or polyed. I really do not think this is a VAM20, WELL AT LEAST FROM THOSE PHOTOS. I WOULD LIKE TO ASK YOU WHAT YOU PAID FOR THE COIN. IF IT IS A '20" WITH A RARITY OF "7" YOU ARE A LUCKY PERSON, AND I WOULD PURCHASE A LOTTERY TICKET.I SEE THE CLOSE UP PICTURES YOU POSTED AND I STILL DO NOT THINK IT IS A REPUNCHED DATED MORGAN, BE WELL, MORGANS DAD...

wwhitman, without clearer pictures and since you mention no other doubling on the coin, the best I can do is VAM 7. High date, both open and closed 6. Yours is an open 6. I agree with others who posted, not a repunched date.

Morgans Dad, The second closeup pic was made using the camera at full macro and using tungsten lighting. Since the camera has no color compensation, it turns the 'ugly color and looks awful'. The reason I did it that way was to get the closest possible pic. I am an neophyte at the VAM process. I didn't know that the rest of the coin should be doubled as well. I thought it was the date only. As I look at the coin I see: the 1 and right /below the left hand part of it, I see another 1. the 8s has the remnants of 8's inside the top circle on the right. the 6 has similar remnants. Thanx in advance - just trying to get a handle on this. Oh, by the way I paid $17 USD

Please explain exactly where the second numerals you see are, and what part of the 2nd numerals you seeare. This all has a bearing on the VAM attributed to the coin. ie: You say you see another 1, well could you please be more specific, do you see the entire number one. Also the number 6 and what else you see in first 6 means the difference of many things. Please be more precise as to what you see, I think we would all benefit from this , yourself inclusive. PS: THANKS FOR THE PICTURE EXPLAINATION...

MorgansRmine, Similar but more pronounced. If you check out the first '8' - reading left to right. It will appear that the top 0 of the 8 is partially filled. Looks like a verticle line in the pic.
