Anybody getting this set this year ? I like the set........I got last year as well (two sets) It's supposed to go on sale today according to the schedule outlook on the U.S. Mint website........though I see no mention of it actually "for sale" as of yet.
The American Legacy sets aren't cheap and THEY'RE HUGE ! But, I like em' and I think I'll get at least one set each year. (I don't have the very first one made in 2006,.....excuse me, 2005, but I know I can pick this up any time for a fair price.)
These giant "book sets" don't fit in my safety deposit boxes of course......but I'll decide whether to keep em' hidden and packed away, or maybe they'll eventually look nice displayed on a book shelf. They don't make a ziplock bag that large. Mine are thus far housed in aluminum foil....really don't know what to do with them at this point.
But so anyway........how many others are going to get the 2008 American Legacy Set ? Your thoughts on the previous two sets ? Opinions on the collecting value/worthiness to these down the line ? (but not really referring to the "double yer' money" kind of "value"......though that'd be nice, but not likely with these, at least not for a generation or two, no, more referring to the "value" of interest and beauty of a Modern Coin set and whether other Modern coin collectors value this set for their collections)

They do look sharp, but I do not buy them since I break my coins out of the OGP and move them to albums.

I bought the '06 and '07 from mint but then found the 2007 for sale at less than cost from the mint at $135 in the aftermarket so haven't bought the 2008. I think they are great but there seems to be no "appreciation" for original mint packaging in the coin universe. For this reason and those you state I will abstain this time figuring it will be there later. On the other hand, ya never know when something odd will happen and make the set worth more. Look at some proof set years or the 2006 Silver Anniversary set. Afftermarket, things are always available but picked over. Ya just never know.

The first set I have is 2005 with the John Marshal and Marine Corps Commems. It has varied in price, I picked up mine for around $90.00 the same set is selling for $174.00. eaglefoot is right, they do take up space and I stopped with the 2006. 2007 & 2008 will have to wait for now.

Eaglefoot: Actually, the first year was 2005, with the John Marshall & Marine Corp dollar. I do think they are over priced for the coins that you receive. Your paying alot for the packaging, all though, they do look nice. As far as increasing in value, look at the 'Prestige Sets', sold from '83 to '97. Several of the sets are valued less than the issue price. The exceptions are '83, '95, '96 and '97, with the '96 set (55,000 sets) listing for $575 in the Red Book. All were over 100,000 except the '96 & '97. With the Mint putting a limit of 50,000 sets, I think they will increase in value in a few years. Since I have the other three, I can't stop now. The expected ship date is toward the end of November, and if I remember right, they have to ship by the end of the year, or not at all. Some sort of law, I think.

The Legacy Set is similar to the old Prestige Sets. It is composed of a set of clad proofs(I have no idea why silver isn't used ) and the commemorative silver dollars for the year.

I like the set and think they will retain their value well.
Actually how big is the "book"? I haven't bought one yet but am considering it.

MorgansDad.....Mfhorn.....Here is some info I grabbed on "last years set".......this was quoted from last year. "This great collection of proof coins marks the third year of the American Legacy sets. This set includes proof versions of the 14 circulating coins for 2007, including the five State Quarters (Montana, Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, and Utah) and the first four Presidential $1 coins (Washington, Adams, Jefferson, and Madison). Also included are proof versions of the Jamestown 400th Anniversary Silver Dollar and the Little Rock Central High School Desegregation Silver Dollar. Presented in elegant packaging, the 2007 American Legacy Collection is the most complete offering of U.S. Mint 2007 coins. Just 27,023 of these sets were sold making them the rarest Legacy set to date."To me, they should have non-ciculating coins in there too.......The ASE and the Sacajewea would be a nice addition to these.......but oh well..... Here's the 2008 info.......2008 United States Mint American Legacy Collection® (AL2)
This remarkable collection of proof condition coins marks the fourth year of the United States Mint American Legacy Collection®. In this set you will find proof versions of all 14 circulating coins for 2008, including the final five quarters of the 50 State Quarters® Program (Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, Alaska and Hawaii) and the four $1 coins from the second year of the Presidential $1 Coin Program (Monroe, Adams, Jackson and Van Buren).
Additionally, this set also includes a proof version of the Bald Eagle Silver Dollar. Presented in unique and elegant packaging, it is the most complete offering of United States Mint 2008-dated proof coins. This exclusive collection is strictly limited to 50,000 sets. And yeah, it's "Mint packaging personified" which doesn't seem to get appreciated in the Coin World, your right, but it's appreciated by me, at least with this particular "set"......and so the 14 proof coins Plus the Proof Bald Eagle Comm. in spectactular packaging does it for me........I love this set and have my order in......(with zero intention of "cracking" anything out of it)........

IMHO, silver is an essential. Had the Legacy set not been clad, it would have been a more attractive option!
