Hello guys, I'm new here and am slowly educating myself on rare coins. I've got plenty of common dollars, dimes, quarters, and the like, but don't have many difficult to find coins.

I recently had someone give me a 1916D Mercury for me to authenticate and purchase. Based on my research and viewing under a loupe I do not believe it to be authentic, my main reasoning is the inside of the D does not appear consistent with exemplars that are graded and does not show the triangle indicated in most counterfeit articles.

Any individual opinions would be appreciated!

Pictures are under 5x lighted magnification, I had them much higher quality, but the forum required I resize. I can email the high quality photos if needed.

Regards,

Sean

.... to the Community!

You are correct in that the coin is counterfeit. The size and position of the mintmark was a huge clue for me.

Thank you all so much for the warm welcome at the help. I'm glad to know that I can still pick out a counterfeit when it comes across my desk!
