I'm from Melbourne, Australia I collect only Australian coins and I,ve inherited my father in law's world coin collection. He had all the coins (some 2000-3000 coins) all mixed randomly. I have since separated them into their individual countries. I intend on replacing them into the albums that they were in originally but in some kind of order. My question is, should world coins be categorized alphabetically by country or categorized alphabetically in Nations or is there another way? Regards MRJON

Welcome Mrjon, There is no right or wrong way to collect. It's your collection and you can do what you want. Personally though, I sort mine my country and then by denomination and then by year and then, if need be, by mint. Have fun Steve

Thanks Triggersmob, that's the way I thought of doing it, I just wasn't sure if there was a specific way of doing it. Now starts the ominous task but I'm allowing 12 months to do it, as I need to find out if there are any coins there of value. My intentions are to organise the albums and then sell them. Thanks again. Mrjon.

Most collectors and all catalogues organize coins the way described by @triggersmob.
By the way, since you expect to spend a lot of time on this project, you might seriously consider if you will be spending a lot of time for little reward. The vast majority of world coins are worth 10-25 cents each. World coin collectors quickly find these common ones and are on the lookout for the better ones.
Someone very familiar with world coins could tell you in an hour which are the good ones. By all means look for the better ones but to put mostly common ones is special albums may not be wroth your effort.
Just a thought.

I have mine sorted alphabetically by country, then by KM# and year. If no KM number is assigned, they go after all the KM#s by year.

Thank you all, Triggersmob, Oriole, Dorado, and Fplagge, all very good points to take into account and I will use them. I am aware that most of the coins don't have any value but I feel that I need to do this for my Father in law because even though we collected differently, we spent a lot of time together talking and sorting coins out together which was the cement of our bond among other things to the dismay of my wife and Mother in Law not to mention the stories that came with a lot of the coins he had. KM #s are unique catalog numbers for world coins.

@mrjon, I'm going to move your thread to a different part of CCF so that it gets more eyeballs on it. I hope that it continues to spur vigorous discussion.

KM# refers to the Krause-Mishler numbers found in Krause coin catalogs. If you don't have them, you may want to get hold of some Krause Standard Catalogs of World Coins to help you sort your collection.

One way to handle these is to donate the low value items to a coin club with young numismatists. Let the kids sort them out!
